Engineering Manager · European Cloud (Observability / PostgreSQL)
Location: Barcelona, hybrid
Salary: €85,000 – 100,000 gross/year + benefits package
About the project
We're working with the tech hub in Barcelona of one of the largest distribution and retail groups in the world, present in more than 30 countries with hundreds of thousands of employees. Beyond providing technology support across the whole group, they've built their own cloud platform, with a genuine ambition to become a European alternative to the big American providers. They have the backing and collaboration of European institutions, and are currently in a strong growth phase in Barcelona.
The role
You'll lead one or two teams of 5 to 6 engineers, supported by a technical Engineering Lead for deeper execution within the domain. You'll have a direct say in technical architecture and in the decisions that shape how the product is built.
You'll be a key part of building the team: deciding which profiles fit the project's culture and leading growth planning as the team scales.
You'll also act as a bridge between the Spain and Germany teams, being the local point of reference for your team.
Key responsibilities
- Support your team's professional development, helping each person move towards their career goals.
- Own the design, development, provisioning and operation of the services in your domain, including the validation and sustainability of system designs.
- Conduct code reviews, ensuring code meets scalability, maintainability and correctness standards.
- Hold a full technical view of the product and actively contribute to the roadmap.
- Lead resource planning for the team based on the product roadmap.
How the day-to-day works
The team delivers an MVP every quarter. The Product Owner defines the "what": product strategy, pricing, roadmap. You'll define the "how": technical design, architecture and execution. Working on a proprietary cloud platform gives you real room for research and autonomous decision-making within the team.
The two open positions
Observability
A small domain today within a company in full expansion, focused on IT security and platform services (Secrets Manager, Telemetry, Mail Out). Specific experience in cryptography and encryption is valued.
PostgreSQL
The platform's most mature and commercially successful product, with thousands of instances already in production. The challenge here will be bringing stability to a highly critical system with a real, active customer base. You'll lead a hybrid Spain/Germany team of around 10 people. Prior database knowledge helps build technical credibility from day one.
What we're looking for
- Between 3 and 5 years of previous experience as a lead, with a clearly technical profile behind you.
- Solid professional experience developing with Golang and Kubernetes.
- Ability to keep the big picture in a fast-paced environment with multiple priorities.
- Strong problem-solving and communication skills.
- A Servant Leader mindset: genuine motivation to guide people according to their needs.
- Fluent English for day-to-day work. German is a plus.
Why this is interesting
- Real technical weight: you'll combine team leadership with real architectural decisions.
- No glass ceiling on salary: a technical expert and a management profile at the same level of responsibility are paid the same.
- A moment of expansion: the team will double in size over the next year, so joining now in a leadership role means being part of that build from the ground up.
- Fast impact: an MVP is delivered to production every quarter, so your decisions show up quickly.
Conditions
- Salary: up to €100,000 gross/year for exceptional profiles, with an annual salary review in January.
- Hybrid and flexible model: around 2-3 days a week in the office.
- Benefits (~€3,700/year, mostly net): flexible compensation (meal vouchers and transport), private health insurance, remote work allowance, wellbeing budget, language classes and ongoing training.
