Job Description

Technical Project Manager, DevOps / SRE / Observability

Mission of the Unit

The Observability unit ensures end-to-end visibility across the bank’s applications and infrastructure. Its work enables the early detection of anomalies and contributes to the availability, performance and stability of the services used by customers and employees. It supports the 24x7 operations team, which acts as the first line of response and escalates incidents to the relevant on-call teams.

Mission of the Role

Lead the governance and evolution of the corporate observability model. This person will be responsible for driving common standards, policies and best practices in a complex technology environment, coordinating their adoption with the relevant areas, and overseeing platforms and vendors. Direct technical administration of the tools sits with specialist teams; this role requires technical judgement to guide decisions, challenge proposals and translate needs between architecture, operations, service owners and management.

Context and Main Challenge

The bank is defining a new architecture and a common observability model to replace the current fragmentation of solutions across teams. The initial proposal for the architecture, tools and policies has already been presented. The challenge is to turn it into an operational standard and extend its adoption through a cross-functional transformation expected to take approximately two years.

Responsibilities

  • Define, evolve and govern monitoring, logging, tracing and APM standards and policies, aligned with the bank’s technology strategy.
  • Coordinate the rollout of the new observability model and its cross-functional initiatives, tracking priorities, dependencies, outcomes and risks.
  • Work with service owners, architecture, development, infrastructure, operations, SRE and process teams to agree on instrumentation and adoption of the model.
  • Act as the functional and technical point of contact for vendors and specialist teams, overseeing platform availability, evolution, service quality and appropriate use.
  • Promote best practices for metrics, alerts, dashboards and traceability, and ensure the quality and reliability of observability data.
  • Define and track service indicators, including KPIs and, where appropriate, SLIs and SLOs, to identify opportunities to improve resilience and user experience.
  • Collaborate with operations teams on incident analysis, root causes and improvement plans, facilitating early detection and escalation.
  • Evaluate market solutions and propose improvements to technology and services, particularly for cloud initiatives, microservices and distributed platforms.

Required Profile

  • At least 3 to 5 years of experience in complex technology environments related to observability, monitoring, IT operations, SRE, DevOps or systems engineering.
  • Strong technical foundation and experience coordinating cross-functional projects, multidisciplinary teams and vendors. Technical career paths that have evolved into management and governance responsibilities are valued.
  • Ability to understand technical and service needs, make decisions, communicate proposals and secure their adoption across diverse teams.
  • Knowledge of observability tools such as Dynatrace, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, Elastic or ELK, Splunk, or equivalent solutions.
  • Knowledge of metrics, logs, traces, instrumentation, alerts, performance analysis and distributed systems monitoring.
  • Working English for communication with international vendors and specialists, approximately B2 or C1 level. Spanish or Catalan.

Desirable Knowledge

  • Experience with cloud (AWS, Azure or GCP), containers (Kubernetes and Docker), microservices and APIs.
  • Knowledge of automation, scripting or programming, as well as the lifecycle of digital services and software.
  • Experience in financial institutions and familiarity with management tools such as Jira or Confluence.

Competencies

Clear communication with technical and business stakeholders, analytical thinking, autonomy, ability to execute, cross-functional influence and a focus on continuous improvement. A balance between technical depth and management capability is required; this is not a role focused on development or the day-to-day administration of tools.

Location and Working Model

No preference between Barcelona, Madrid or Alicante, provided the person can attend their workplace in line with the bank’s hybrid working model. The team usually works on-site on Tuesdays and Thursdays; coordination across locations also takes place via Teams.
